  • This essay analyzes the relationship between the concepts of %22the civic%22 and %22the proletarian%22 in modern society. It criticizes the uncritical adopting of %22civil society%22 as the leading concept of contemporary democracy. It argues that the uncritical use of the concept of %22civil society%22 can lead to the exclusion of %22uncivil%22 (for example, %22proletarian%22) elements from the field of legitimate public engagement.
