Description	The paper presents an updated overview of ploidy level/chromosome numbers in 228 representatives of the subgenus Rubus (brambles) in Europe, including the first karyological findings for 27 species recorded in the Czech Republic. The karyological characters are known only for 30% of more than 750 species recognized in Europe. The tetraploids prevail in this polyploid agamic complex, the other cytotypes are diploid, triploid, pentaploid and hexaploid. Several cytotypes within one species is rare in European brambles. Pattern in the variation in the ploidy level partly corresponds to taxonomic classification within the subgenus. An actualized karyological overview may increase our understanding of the processes that shaped the present structure of this polyploid complex, namely the origin of the recent hybrids and genesis of some of the apomictic species.
