Description	Ecological requirements for temperature, light, nitrogen and carbon of six polar Chlorella-like species were studied in the unit for crossed gradients of temperature and light. Temperature and light requirements were similar in the majority of strains, reflecting thus comparable conditions in original microhabitats. All studied strains tolerated near-zero temperatures and were able to grow at temperatures above 20 °C, so they are considered psychrotolerant. Nitrate and ammonium additions decreades the growth rate in five strains, probably due to nitrogen oversaturation. While carbonate addition stimulated growth in all strains, bicarbonate addition increased growth rate in five strains and decased growth rate in one strain, indicating thus carbon limitation during cultivation and probably different carbon uptake mechanisms.
