Description
  • The population structure of two parental species and of their hybrids coexisting in two model populations was compared with the structure of the progeny which is generated by particular maternal plants in the field. With respect to ploidy level and reproductive mode, the apomictic mothers produced more diverse progeny than did the sexual mothers. The role of the high-polyploid hybrids, which arose from fertilized unreduced female gametes of apomicts, is pointed out. Such hybrids serve as important source of population diversity due to their ability of versatile reproduction.
