Description
- The paper deals with the mtDNA sequences of four Chadic populations (Hide, Kotoko, Mafa and Masa) from Northern Cameroon. By analysis of FST genetic distances the authors observed that except Mandenka all populations living west of the inland delta of the Niger as well as in North Africa show an important genetic differentiation from the Central and Eastern African groups. The analysis of molecular variance and phylogeographic analysis reveled that more than half of the Chadic mtDNA sequences of Northern Cameroon can be traced to the region around the Upper and Middle Nile Valley and the Eastern Africa. This observation is highly surprising if we consider the present-day geographical distance (at about 2,000 km) separating these two groups. This paper is trying to interpret these molecular genetic observations in the light of recent linguistic and archaeological achievements which consider the Chadic branch in the Afro-Asiatic phylum to be of eastern origin.
