Cell surface proteolglycans play crucial role in morphogenesis, growth regulation and tumor suppression.In humans EXT1 has been mapped to 8q24.1(11). Together with paralogues EXT2 and EXT3, they are involved in hereditary multiple exostoses, a disorder characterized by cartilaginous excrescences near ends of the diaphyses of the bones of the extremites(10). Because of EXT1Ľ map position this gene can be excluded a a candidate gene for QTLs on chromosome 4 affecting growth(12) or carcass lenght(13).
