Description	The genus Cobitis is the most speciose assemblage among the family Cobitidae (about 50 known valid species), due to a very active process of evolution (tachitelyc evolution). By its different species it has a huge area, across whole Europe and northern Asia, from the Atlantic Ocean basin to Pacific Ocean basin. The different aspects of this tachitelyc evolution (morphological, genetical and biogeographical) are discussed. In the final part of the contribution is presented the check-list of the valid species of the genus, along the illustration of some of them.
