Description
  • A dominate trend in high performance computing (HPC) is to use networks of workstations (NOW) as a cheaper alternative to massively parallel multiprocessors or supercomputers (classic parallel computers). In such parallel computers based on NOW or network of NOW (Grid) individual computing nodes (workstations) are connected through widely used communication standard networks and co-operate to solve complex problems. Each workstation typically runs the full operating system and communicates with other using standard communication protocols as TCP/IP, IPX/SPX, NetBEUI etc. Each workstation is threatened similarly to a processing element in classic parallel computers. But personal computers, used as workstations, are far more powerful and flexible than the processing elements in classic parallel computers. To make the whole system appear to applications as a single parallel computing engine (virtual parallel computer), run-time environments such as PVM (Parallel virtual machine), MPI (Message passing interfaces, OpenMP) are often used to provide an extra layer of abstraction. With the continually increasing power of personal computers, such an approach will be a viable, less expensive alternative to classic parallel computers also for the future. To exploit the parallel processing capability of a NOW, the application program must be paralleled. In this paper we discuss, from the point of performance, how workstations in a NOW’s can be used to solve effectively practical problems in a parallel way.
