Description
  • A garnet of the pyralspite group from the classical locality Třebívlice in the Northern Bohemia (Czech Republic) and that of Shavaryn Tsaram deposit (Mongolia) were analysed using an electron microprobe, Mössbauer spectroscopy and an X-ray powder diffraction to compare the chemical composition and crystal structures of these two sample sets. No obvious zoning was observed in the examined grain as the measured chemical composition demonstrates and the BSE image shows. The average empirical formula based on 12 oxygens per formula unit, full occupancy of all sites and maintaining of the charge balance for the Mongolian garnet from Shavaryn Tsaram is (Mg1.56Fe2+0.92Ca0.46Ba0.04Mn0.02)Σ3.00(Al1.91Fe3+0.08Ti0.03)Σ2.00 (Si2.97Al0.04)Σ3.00O12 and for that from Třebívlice (Mg2.11Fe2+0.51Ca0.36Mn0.03)Σ3.01(Al1.77Cr0.15Ti0.03)Σ1.95 Si3.03O12 giving following end-member composition: Py53Al31Gr12Ad4 (Mongolian garnet) and Py71Al17Gr12 (Czech garnet). The Mössbauer spectroscopy shows dominance of Fe2+ in the garnet from Shavaryn Tsaram. Ferric iron represents 10 % of all Fe in the sample. X-ray powder diffraction confirmed the identity of the studied material to pyrope-almandine series garnet. The main difference can be seen in the presence of chromium in the Czech garnet while the content of chromium in the Mongolian garnet is under the detection limit. The content of magnesium and iron also differs.
