Description
  • Microsporidia are ubiquitous, spore-forming, intracellular parasites infecting vertebrates. Some of them are important opportunistic pathogens in humans, including three species of genus Encephalitozoon. Intraspecies genetic variation with a different range of hosts is known in E. cuniculi: genotype I (rabbit), II (mouse), III (dog). Recently, E. cuniculi is often observed in pet animals. This study described the first report of encephalitozoonosis caused by E. cuniculi genotype III in a group of arvicolid rodents Steppe lemming (Lagurus lagurus) kept as pets by a private owner. Adult lemmings showed symptoms as progressive weight lost, aggression and cannibalism. Purulent conjunctivitis and hind limb paresis were noted 24-48 hours before death. In a period of three months, whole pet breeding colony comprised of 15 animals was affected and died. Organs (heart, lungs, liver, kidney, spleen, muscle and brain) of two diseased adults were processed for histolopathological examination, which reveal microsporidial vacuoles with typical spores (~ 2 x 1?m) in brain tissue and kidneys. A total DNA of the organs was isolated for PCR diagnostic of E. cuniculi and the internal transcribed spacer region (ITS) of rDNA was amplified and sequenced (Katzwinkel-Wladarsch et al., 1996; Hester et al., 2002). All organs examined by PCR were positive. The alignment of the obtained sequences with reference ITS sequences showed 100% homology with E. cuniculi genotype III (dog strain). This genotype was previously identified in dogs, in tamarin colonies from zoos, in birds and in humans (Mathis et al., 2005; Kašičková et al., 2009). The present study displayed that E. cuniculi genotype III can cause lethal infection in rodents, which can represent a potential source of the infection for immunocompromised humans or animals (dogs). Moreover, the Steppe lemmings can be a new useful laboratory model for this microsporidial infection.
