Description
  • In some European countries in the recent years there is an increasing interest on donkey due to the development of their use as pet animal, in leisure activities, for onotherapy (a new therapy/instrument in pet therapy) and especially for the rediscovery of donkey milk as food source for children affected with cow milk allergy. Despite there are few data regarding the donkey's parasitic diseases especially those with a protozoal etiology as neosporosis. Two hundred and thirty eight donkeys from Southern Italy were tested for serum antibodies to Neospora caninum. The donkeys were used for milk (n=183), for meat (n=16), for breeding (n=12) or as a pet animals (n=27). There were 219 females and 19 males of age ranging from one month to 24 years. The donkeys were of the following breeds: Martina Franca (n=53), Amiata (n=46), Sicilian-Grey (n=14), Ragusano (n=8), Sardinian (n=7) and 110 crossbreeds. Sera were tested by a competitive-inhibition enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay for antibodies against Neospora caninum. The sera were marked positive, if more than 30% inhibition was found. Antibodies against N. caninum were found in 28/238 donkeys (11.8%) with inhibition ranging from 30.07% do 44.34%. Antibodies were found in 26 females and 2 males, in age categories from one month to 22 years. Antibodies against N. caninum were found in breeds Amiata (n=9), Martina Franca (n=7), Sicilian-grey (n=5), Ragusano (n=2), and in crossbreeds (n=5). The majority of positive animals were used for milk (n=23), three donkeys were used as a pet animals and two positive males were used for breeding. No clinic anomalies were observed in the seropositive animals. This is the first serologic survey for Neospora spp. antibodies performed on donkeys.
