Description
| - Two Egyptian Vultures (Neophron percnopterus) and eight Cinereous Vultures (Aegypius monachus) were intoxicated by lead in a collection of vultures kept at the Zoo of the Capital City of Prague. The problem developed after one month of returning the birds to their aviaries following old minium paint removal. The paint dust and chips sanded off the steel aviary construction contaminated the soil in such an extent that the surface layer contained as much as 25850 μg/g of lead. A male Egyptian Vulture died, while other vultures showed no clinical signs. Liver, kidney and blood lead concentrations were 12.2, 8.16 and 2.66 μg/g, respectively. The blood lead levels dropped from the initial value of 1.07 to 0.28 μg/g within two months in the cage?mate female Egyptian Vulture. Blood lead levels in eight Cinereous Vultures averaged 1.497 initially, decreased to 0.535 without any therapy, and to 0.236 μg/g a month after Ca-EDTA administration.
