  • Roe deer (Capreolus capreolus) is a native game species inhabiting forest ? steppe habitats throughout the Czech Republic. It is economically one of the most important game species because the estimated spring population and bag records amount to 260 000 and 110 000 individuals, respectively. The objective of this paper is to provide analysis of main mortality causes of a total of 1606 roe deer cadavers subjected to autopsy and subsequent laboratory examination. Dietetic disturbances and parasitic infections are the most important causes of mortality in the Czech Republic representing 45.8 and 41.2%, respectively. Other causes such as bacterial infections, intoxications and miscellaneous ones amount only to 4.4, 3.8 and 0.4%, respectively. Injuries cause about 2.18% of mortality cases. Some cadavers supplied for examination are not amenable to diagnostics due to autolysis.
