  • Toxic effects of cyanobacterial products have also been recognised in avian species. As the current pieces of knowledge on the toxicity of cyanobacteria in birds are rather indirect evidence based (i.e., observation of mortality in several avian species under natural conditions associated with the occurrence of water blooms and long-term stay and foraging of birds at the affected locality), it was our aim to perform evidence-based avian toxicity tests and evaluate the effects of different concentrations of cyanobacterial toxins in birds. For this purpose we used cyanobacterial biomass harvested from the Brno water dam with colonial cyanobacteria of the Microcystis genus prevailing in the species composition. The concentrated biomass contained following levels of microcystins expressed in ?g/g of dry weight =~ ?g/L: MC-RR (141.84 =~2116.1), MC-unidentified (56.06 =~ 875.8), MC-YR (33.72 =~ 526.8), MC-LR (141.68 =~ 2213.6), sum of microcystins (373.29 =~ 5832.3).
