Description
  • Infections of domesticated dogs by a parasitic nematode Oslerus osleri (Filaroides osleri) lead to canine verminous nodular bronchitis. In the present work, Oslerus osleri infection was diagnosed in a ten-months-old intact female of Miniature German Spitz presented with a three months history of progressive coughing. Diagnosis was based upon visualization of characteristic lesions on bronchoscopy and followed by recovery of adults of O. osleri from tracheal nodules. First stage larvae obtained from Baermannised faecal samples were used for morphological and molecular confirmation of the diagnosis based on bronchoscopy. The bitch was successfully treated with fenbendazole at a dose of 50 mg/kg once a day for two weeks. This is the first report of autochthonous infection of dogs with O. osleri in the Czech Republic and one of very few cases of O. osleri infection described in dogs in Europe. In conclusion, the presented data indicate that lungworm infection in dogs are of increasing interest and should be considered as differential diagnosis in animals with insistent respiratory/cardiopulmonary distress.
