Description
  • Hypertrophic cardiomyopathy (HCM) is the most prevalent acquired heart disease in cats. Although the etiology of feline HCM is unknown, certain breeds appear to be predisposed suggesting a genetic pattern. Sometimes heart muscle thickening similar to HCM can develop secondary to other disorders such as hyperthyroidism (HT) and systemic hypertension also leading to heart failure. The aim of the study was to retrospectively determine the proportion of patients with myocardial hypertrophy resembling HCM with HT (HT/HCM). Also the association of thyrotoxicosis with clinical, radiographical, ECG and echocardiographical signs was evaluated. Clinical records of feline patients diagnosed with HCM in a period of 2 years in the Clinic of Dog and Cat Diseases at the Faculty of Veterinary Medicine, University of Veterinary and Pharmaceutical Sciences were used (2008-2009). All data was analyzed using descriptive and non-parametric statistics. During this period 16 cats were diagnosed with HCM by conventional methods. There were 9 males and 7 females. T4 was measured in all cases and in 3 cases showed elevated values. In cats with solely HCM the males predominated (61%) and more than a half (53%) were domestic short hair cats (DSH). British (31%) and Persian (16%) cats also were overrepresented. In HT/HCM cats the females predominated (66%) and all cases were DSH. In 2 cases of HT/HCM the signs were not related with heart disease (vomiting, weight loss). Cats with HT/HCM had a high correlation with blood pressure values, size of the P wave and QRS complexes on the ECG and several echocardiographic values. Arrhythmia was present in 3 HCM cats but no in HT/HCM cats. Though statistically insignificant, the cats with HT/HCM were older, had higher blood pressure and decreased mortality than cats with normal T4 values. Cats with HCM should be investigated also for HT, which can explain clinical signs, hypertension and ECG and echocardiographical abnormalities. Though therapy for H
