Description
  • All great apes including chimpanzees (Pan troglodytes) are generally classified as herbivores. Though apes in the wild consume different types of food, their diet always contain significant amount of fiber. Hindgut fermentation is a key feature that enables apes to digest dietary fiber not available to animal hydrolytic enzymes. The main end products of fermentation are short chain fatty acids (SCFAs) which are absorbed through the walls of intestine and transported to the other cells in the body. The cells are able to utilize SCFAs instead of glucose in the citric acid cycle for energy production. Entodiniomorphid ciliate Troglodytella abrassarti are present in high numbers in large intestine of both captive and wild chimpanzees. They have been considered as symbionts contributing to fermentation despite there are no data about the metabolic activities of these ciliates in vitro. The aim of this study was to investigate hydrolytic activity of T. abrassarti in captive chimpanzees. Protozoal fractions
