Description	Former, generally accepted Levine's definition of the genus Isospora (Apicomplexa: Eimeriina) was based on number of sporocysts and sporozoites in the oocyst. Recent studies focused on molecular phylogeny of Isospora clearly showed the polyphyly of Isospora and it is nowadays accepted that species of Isospora possessing Stieda bodies on sporocysts belong to assemblage of the Eimeriidae, while the mammalian species of Isospora excysting via sutures in sporocyst wall clustered with members of subfamily Toxoplasmatinae within the Sarcocystidae. It is evident that former nomenclature of so called Isospora is based on homoplazy and that the genus needs re-evaluation according to the rules of zoological nomenclature. The type species of the genus plays a key-role in solution of this problem. Genus Isospora Schneider, 1881 has been described based on its type species - Isospora rara from a slug Limax cinereoniger from France.
