Description	In 1999-2001 a field trial was established on two sites (-abice - altitude 184 m and Valeov - altitude 460 m) with two potato varieties (very early Rosara and semi-early Korela). The objective was to study the effect of above-limit accumulation of the ha zardous Cd and As elements in the soil on the rate of photosynthesis, development of the leaf area, dry matter weight of the hill and the harvested tubers. In 1999, prior to the establishment of the trials, the original levels of Cd and As in the soil we re natural and we increased them by applying single doses of the elements to 0.4, 2 and 4 mg Cd.kg-1, and 4.5, 30, 60 and 120 mg As.kg-1. The increasing concentrations of the hazardous elements had a negative affect on plant growth and tuber yields. The results were more conclusive in the lower-altitude site (-ab+ice). Comparisons of the effect of the two elements revealed that increasing doses of As were more toxic for the plants than Cd.
