Description	The paper is a part of solution of a post-doctorate grant awarded by the Grant agency of the Czech Republic (GAČR No. 402/02/P059) connected with the research plan of FBE MUAF in Brno (GAMSM 431100007) solving adaptation of business subjects of food industry on the development trends of competitive environment. It briefly characterises the whole production and distribution vertical of food production and focuses on the last part of this vertical - retail businesses. It analyses the development and current structure of retail network in the Czech Republic with an emphasis on the food sales businesses. The paper substantiates the high bargaining power of retail chains, which influence also the competitive environment in the food-processing businesses and through this also in agricultural primary production.
