Description
  • The damage was evaluated in spruce stands of 40 - 90 years of age at four different localities. Bark ripping off caused by incautious contact with machinery or skidded stem is the second most frequent cause of red heart rot (Stereum sanguinolentum) infection after game bark stripping. 148 damaged trees were examined. A chain-saw cross-cut was performed through the centre of the wound and then every 20 cm upwards and downwards from the centre. A digital record of the rotting process was used to assess the percentage of the damage by image analysis. The most important factor in the subsequent rotting process is the width of the wound. The increase of the rot in the tree depends directly on the area and age of the wound. The rotting process starts after three years and the rate of spreading is 20 - 42 cm per year according to site class.
