Description
  • Diverse woody plants in more than 3000 ha in Hungary are infected by European mistletoe (Viscum album). This area has recently increased. The only way to control this hemiparasite shrub is to remove the infected branches - other effective control methods are currently unknown. A hyperparasitic fungus (Phaeobotryosphaeria visci) might be a good candidate to develop an effective biocontrol agent against mistletoe. It was necessary to find antibiotics which make the isolation of this pathogen easier and not effect mycelial growth negatively during strain maintenance. In our previous study we tested the negative effects of ampicillin, kanamycin and rifampicin on mycelial growth. In this experiment we examined these antibiotics in combination to study the potential negative synergistic effects on mycelial growth. We compared the effect of antibiotic combinations against the effect of each antibiotic separately. Additionally, we measured the mycelial growth under different temperatures to find the optimal conditions for mycelial growth. The colony diameters were significantly higher at 25°C, but no sporulation was observed in this temperature. While rifampicin has stronger antifungal effect; the other antibiotic combinations are also suitable for maintenance of these fungal strains.
