Description
  • To simplify the production of suitable nursery material, there is a continual search for cheap and easy methods of propagating rootstocks for fruit trees. In-vitro methods are very useful, but relatively demanding in terms of skill and equipment, so taking cuttings remains an adequate alternative for vegatative propagation. To test the suitability of this technique for propagating pear rootstocks, the following material was chosen: 'Pyrodwarf', 'Rhenus 3', 'Cydomalus', 'BA 29', 'Fox 11', 'OHxF 333', 'MA', 'Sydo', 'Adams','S1', the pear seedling Pyrus communis and two varieties of asian pears, 'Shiseiky'and 'Mansan'. Rootstock 'Cydomalus' and 'Pyrodwarf' performed best regarding callus formation (100%), followed by 'Rhenus 3' (75%) and 'OHxF 333' (76%). The highest success rates were seen in Pyrodwarf (94%), Rhenus (69%) and S1 (67%). The biggest problem in taking cuttings was finding a suitable growing medium to encourage good root formation.
