Description
  • We focused on the whole-tree and stand eco-physiology, mostly water relations and structure in forests and orchards. Two methods for measurements of sap flow were elaborated: trunk heat balance, THB and heat field deformation, HFD. They both were found very suitable for studies of water relations, but they can be also used for quantitative estimates of effective (i.e., function-related) tree structures. Effective size of tree crowns was estimated on the basis of sap flow daily totals. Effective form of tree crowns was estimated on the basis of diurnal dynamics of sap flow, when evaluated together with corresponding data of solar radiation (or potential evapotranspiration) introducing radiation data measured on flat horizontal surface, or other spatially pronounced geometrical form, e.g., sphere. Effective whole tree root system distribution was analyzed by the sap flow radial patterns, distinguishing water, which flows through outer or inner sapwood and comes from superficial or sinker roots respectively. The aim of most studies done using specialized mobile field instrumentation was to get information important for better understanding of tree eco-physiology, but allowing landscape applications suitable for practical purposes, such as diagnostics or objective background for proper management.
