  • In the condition of climatic change transition of Norway spruce monocultures to more ecosystem-stable mixed stands seems to be inevitable. The change of tree species composition towards broadleaf species is often realized either by underplanting or by gap cutting. In the relatively homogeneous soil and moisture conditions photosynhtetically active radiation (PAR) is the most important factor determining prosperity of saplings. However its measurement presents a specific problem requiring coverage of large area with number of sensors. We assessed spatial distribution of PAR in the small clear-cut by the three different ways. In the first case we used a net of eleven sensors distributed throughout the gap. Another way was measurement of actual PAR using one sensor which was manually moved on defined pathway. In the third case we developed fully automatic system of sensor moving on defined route. All methods gave reliable results. Their applicability differs in cost, labour input and maintenance need.
