Description
  • The study is a follow-up of the analysis of evaporation from the soil surface and ground vegetation in a young spruce and beech stand and in the open area carried out in the permanent field experiment station Deštné in the Orlické hory in 2005. These stands were affected by an unusually large amount of snow when the total snow-water content reached 819.0 mm in the spruce stand and 832.7 mm in the beech stand at the total height of snow 157.2 and 164.1 cm, respectively. After the %22flood%22 of wet snow in the first decade of February (158 mm) and in the period from 6/3 to 13/3 (even 182 mm), some 98% spruce was damaged. It referred particularly to top breaks but in 50%, only 2 to 3 whorls of branches remained living. The beech stand was not virtually damaged at all. Only 10% subdominant trees with unfavourable slenderness ratio were damaged. This finally meant that in 2005, on average the double increase of evaporation occurred in the spruce stand after the disaster situation.
