Description
| - The Czech Republic has been a member state of the EU since 1st May 2004, during the first six months of the year 2009 the Czech Republic holds the Presidency of the Council of the EU. On this occasion, our research started at secondary schools in the Vysočina Region. The aim of this research was to get the information about the knowledge of last-grade students, and to get their opinion on the EU. The test included 40 questions (the multiple choice of the correct answer out of four possibilities). These questions investigated the knowledge of the EU. 20 questions investigated an opinion on the EU. Further, the test included nine identification questions (sex, number of city inhabitants, political opinion, family property relations, future profession, an interest in the EU events, language knowledge and the type of secondary school). The investigation was anonymous; it was not possible to identify persons or schools. In total, there participated 62 schools (15 private, 47 public ones), there were 18 grammar schools, 44 comprehensive schools. There study 17,495 students (6,864 at grammar schools, 10,631 at comprehensive schools). In the last grade, there were 3,650 students (1,232 at grammar schools and 2,418 at comprehensive schools), the questionnaire was filled by 1,576 students (414 at grammar schools and 1,162 at comprehensive schools). The question 'Are you interested in questions connected with the EU?' was answered by the answerers in the following way: * I am not interested at all (26.5% of students) * I am not interested (50.1% of students) * I am interested (20.2% of students) * I am very interested (3.2% of students) Knowledge-testing questions were purposely selected not to let even a very good student with extraordinary knowledge about the EU answer all questions correctly. It turned up that more than 90% correctness was in no question. Only grammar school students got in four questions more than 80% correctness. Students at comprehensive schools
