Description
  • Potato belongs to the traditional crops in the Czech Republic. It is very demanding crop, the yield and quality are determined especially by the weather during vegetation period and at the time of harvest. For this crop is typical relatively high price fluctuation, resulting in income uncertainty and distinctive acreage changes from year to year. Especially because of these characteristics there is a declining tendency in potato production during last 15 years in the Czech Republic. However this crop has the potential to play a leading role in Czech agriculture even for future. This role is conditioned especially by the use of potential of increased added value. One of the possibilities how to stabilise income and increase the profitability of potato production is production of potato with higher consumer quality, especially through increasing content of physiologically valuable substances via mineral nutrition. Utilization of biologically active forms of these functional nutrients from food is by an order higher and more certain in comparison with mineral form of different nutrition additives. It is possible to use these enriched products for the increase of the daily dosage of essential substances, especially those with reduced intake. Among these reduced substances typically belongs selenium. Shortage of selenium results in increased risk of civilisation diseases. Feasible method of the increase of selenium in potatoes is foliar selenium application. This application has impact both on the content of selenium in potato and on yields. The experiment with foliar selenium application was done in 2005 and 2006 in Southern Moravia. Impact of this application on the content of this element in potato and on yield was analysed. In second part was done cost analysis of potato production with selenium application. In the concluding part estimated impact o
