  • In 1990-1994 the effects of different soil tillage systems on yields of grain maize grown after three preceding crops (silage maize, winter wheat and spring barley) on a fertile chernozem soil under drier and warmer conditions of a maize growing region wComparisons were made of conventional tillage (ploughing to a depth of 0.22 and 0.24 m), shallow tillage (ploughing to 0.15 m and loosening to 0.10 and 0.12 m), deep tillage (loosening to 0.40 - 0.45 m) and sowing grain maize into a winter-destroyed catcThe observations revealed a trend towards reduced yields after deeper tillage and higher yields after sowing grain maize into a winter-destroyed catch crop.
