| - The aim of this study was to describe the effect of different amounts of added mineral nitrogen (2 g N m-2 yr-1 and 15 g N m-2 yr-1) and phosphorus (6 g P m-2 yr-1) on the soil microbial activities in alpine meadow. The Salatín study site is situated in the Western Tatra Mountains, in Tatra National Park, Slovakia. Availability of mineral nitrogen was measured %22in situ%22 using ion exchange resins applied into upper soil horizon. We used short term soil incubations (till 24 hours) with the intention to determine whether the basic microbial activities; basal and substrate indicated respiration and N2O production correspond with field findings. Based on presented results, we can conclude that the ability to immobilize nitrogen in microbial and plant communities in the alpine meadows is exhausted. Increasing the ecosystem capacity to immobilize N can be achieved by adding phosphorus, which can confirm the ecosystem limitations by the available phosphorus.
