Description
  • Alpine meadows, which were previously lacking in nitrogen, are due to anthropogenic deposition of nitrogen compounds overloaded with nitrogen. Increased input of nitrogen to alpine ecosystems is reflected in the activities of microbial communities, which first respond to these changes. Microbial oxidation of unutilized nitrogen, which can then escape from the ecosystem accompanied with the basic cations, leads to escalation of acidification. The activity of microbial communities may thus influence the acidification process, primarily caused by acid atmospheric deposition. Experimental work was done on Salatín locality in the Western Tatras region (Slovak republic) on experimental plots deigned as; control treatment, treatment with different nitrogen loads as well as the treatment with an increased input of phosphorus. Availability and movement of mineral nitrogen was monitored %22in situ%22 method, field technique using ion exchange resins applied in special covers. Thus, we can indirectly infer the degree and intensity of microbial processes associated with mineralization, immobilization, nitrification and denitrification of soil nitrogen compounds. It has been shown that the amount of mineral nitrogen captured increased in the treatments with increasing nitrogen load. By contrast, in control plots and in plots with the addition of phosphorus was found the lowest amount of available nitrogen.
