Description
| - Glutathione (GSH) is a sulphur-containing tripeptide of primary structure gama-Glu-Cys-Gly that plays an important role in the elimination of reactive oxygen species, in redox con-trol, in cell cycle regulation and in signal transduction. Another important feature is its ability to form conjugates with xenobiotics (herbicides, toxic metals, etc.) which are then stored in cell vacuoles. The present review shows the connection of GSH with plant cell detoxication mechanisms. The salient features include the role of GSH as an antioxidant reagent, its role in detoxication mechanism of xenobiotics and heavy metals, and finally the utilization of GSH as a plant stress biomarker. Attention is also paid to new analytical methods of this tripeptide and other Cys-containing biomolecules (phytochelatins, metal-lothioneins). The study of the molecular properties of GSH, one of the most important detoxification compound for plants, is fundamental for other scientific fields such as eco-physiology or ecotoxicology. (en)
