  • Autistic spectrum disorders (ASD) represent severe neurodevelopmental conditions associated with typical set of symptoms, both specific and non-specific. The clinical picture of ASD is significantly dominated by deficits in the form of disturbed communication ability that is apparent early in childhood. The primary aberration is seen at the pragmatic language level, i.e. in the area of social application of the communication ability. Preference for an interdisciplinary or transdisciplinary approach constitutes a significant prerequisite and the determining factor for proper and comprehensive intervention, especially across the disciplines of social sciences and medicine. The objective of the presented paper is to emphasize the substantiated nature of the interdisciplinary cooperation in individuals with autistic spectrum disorders. The authors will primary focus on the role of the speech therapist that will be defined not only from the theoretical point of view, but also reflected through the outcomes of a research carried out at the Faculty of Education, Palacky University, Olomouc, Czech Republic (IGA, PdF_2011_010, Logopedická intervence u osob s poruchou autistického spektra (Speech Therapy Intervention in Individuals with Autistic Spectrum Disorders); UP 2011/2012, main researcher: Vitásková). Specific role shall be played by the pragmatic language level as the basic issue of ASD, which is also the main area of study of the initiated research at the Faculty of Education, Palacky University, Olomouc, Czech Republic (Czech Science Foundation GAČR, Pragmatická jazyková rovina u osob s PAS; Pragmatic Language Level in Individuals with ASD, reg. nr. 14-31457S, 2014/2016, researcher: Vitásková).
