Description
  • Disruption of communication skills is a specific symptom of autism spectrum disorders (ASD) and, together with deficits in reciprocal social interaction and imagination, shapes the clinical picture of this neurodevelopmental disorder. In this paper, the aberrations affecting non-verbal communication are discussed, which usually become the initial and striking symptoms that parents and professionals (especially speech therapists and paediatricians) record early in childhood. The main goal is the detection, analysis and comparison of non-verbal communication in persons with ASD, from the perspective of speech therapists working in the Ministry of Education and Health of the Czech Republic. Theoretical aspects and compilations of domestic and foreign investigative research will be described in the introductory part of this paper which forms the basis of the following part. The essential content is the presentation of results obtained within the framework of the investigative research carried out at the Institute of Special Education Studies, Faculty of Education, Palacký University in Olomouc, as a partial investigation of grant specific research (IGA) called Communication deficits in selected forms of impaired communication skills with a focus on assessing the partial determinants of verbal and non-verbal components of communication in special education practice (PdF UP, PdF_2013_021, 2013/2014, researcher: Kateřina Vitásková).
