Description
  • The article describes possible approaches to measuring the attitudes when using the semantic differential. It shows in which way the classic Osggod's three-factor semantic differential and ATER two-factor semantic differential work. Based on the comparative research performed in the Czech Republic and Poland with application of the standardised ATER two-dimensional semantic differential, it is pointed out that mere translation of the semantic differential scales does not always have to bring relevant results. Its application in other sociocultural conditions, specifically Polish undergraduates, does not have to reflect reality objectively without prior verification using a factor analysis. The semantic differential is a suitable method for measuring the attitudes, however, it is necessary to perform its checking factor analysis prior to every application in a different target group than that for which this instrument was determined and standardised. In our research we used the already standardised questionnaire - ATER, however, some of its scales could not be used for calculation of evaluations and energies of the examined terms. The checking factor analysis showed that some scales do not have an absolutely exact factor structure. However, the greatest problems occurred during application of the semantic differential in other sociocultural conditions, specifically undergraduates in Poland. In spite of the fact that the scales of the semantic differential were consulted and translated by a native speaker, the factor analysis showed that there were only a few suitable scales for determination of evaluation and energy of the examined terms and that perception of the terms in Poland was partially different from perception of the terms at the respondents of the same age in the Czech population.
