Description
| - The contribution focuses on the selected aspects of speech and language difficulties in persons with symptomatic speech disorders - in groups of individuals with specific communication deficits related to various impairments, diseases and other pathological conditions. The author would like to stress the importance of speech and language specialists' role in terms of early, continuous and/or final diagnosis the specific communication markers and its possible prognostic significance. The specific objective of this paper is to refer to selected right-hemisphere communication deficits mostly from the aetiological and symptomatological point of view. The reason is that the need for implementing the knowledge of the consequences of right-hemisphere impairment in oral, graphic and sign communication is ever increasing and consequently, actual outcomes of the scientific knowledge thus gained should be incorporated into the university preparation of speech and language therapists. In comparison to the predominant left-hemisphere aetiology of the majority of communication disorders, the right-hemisphere deficits have remained of marginal interest to speech and language therapists. In terms of neuroplasticity of the brain and complicated lateralization of language and speech abilities, the consequences of right-hemispheric communication deficits are often unpredictable and atypical. The paper herein deals with e.g. autistic spectrum disorders, especially with the Asperger syndrome and atypical lateralization effects. It emphasises the need for symptomatological and diagnostic approach in the educational dimensions of adolescents and adults.
