Description
  • The contribution deals with the possibilities of mixed design of pedagogical research in the frame of longitudinal research project focused on children's reading habits. The first part presents the project's background, particularly the specific features of mixed research in the field of pedagogics. We try to view this question in the context of contemporary theoretical knowledge and at the same time to approach it from the point of view of the project's intentions and requirements. The following part describes the structure of the research, including the explanation of the research intentions, defining the observed phenomena and the research sample. The long-term research project is carried out in eight classrooms at lower secondary and secondary schools and primarily focused on the attitudes of pupils and students towards reading and literature. Our contribution here presents that part of the project which consists of the research in two classrooms at a lower secondary school. The article describes in detail particular methods of data collection and their importance in the research. Quantitative methods are represented by questionnaire research which is used for monitoring the changes in the students' attitudes towards reading, and by semantic differential which is used for monitoring the changes in the reception of poetry. The attitudes towards reading from the students' point of view are observed by qualitative methods such as students' record diaries and focus group discussion. Using mixed methods in the research provides us with a comprehensive view on the ways in which students perceive reading and which factors can affect their attitudes towards reading and literature.
