Description
  • The chapter is focused on study of suburbanization in the Olomouc region by GIS tools. In the theoretical part, the processes of suburbanization and urbanization, with emphasis on its side-effects and possible ways to study are described. Also selected geospatial technologies, computer models, software and data used for research of suburbanization are described in this part. The main content of the chapter is covered by description of the process of estimation suburbanization intensity by data from census. This process consists of following steps: 1. Delimitation of area of urban processes, 2. Determination of suburbanization period, 3. Selection of criteria and determination of intensities, 4. Determination of suburbanization intensity, 5. Determination of suburbanization intensity - influenced only by Olomouc city. Important part of this process is estimation of criteria and weights of each criteria which was done by multi-criteria analysis. As the most significant criteria that play important role for this process was established: Migration intensity - migration balance, Build-up areas intensity - increase of build-up areas, Housing intensity - increase of number of finished flats and houses, Commuting intensity - number of people commuting to Olomouc. Technical part of the model is represented by computer model %22Suburban Analyst%22 created for the GIS environment with which it is possible to determine the intensity of suburbanization in the selected areas. In ArcGIS environment model is represented by Toolbox Suburban Analyst, which contains two tool sets (Calculate Intensity and Calculate Suburbanization). The advantage of the model is its intuitive graphic design, through which all sub-models can be run separately and repeatedly. It is also possible to modify individual input parameters.
