  • Understanding grazing by domesticated ruminants for animal production is of high economic importance throughout the world and therefore, is paramount in designing management strategies for livestock production. The plant-animal interface is the central feature of these systems. Food quantity and quality are major determinants of animal production. Both food quantity and quality herbivores maintain through selective foraging which alters sward structure, modifies plant species composition and thus produces new patterns of plant biomass production. Therefore, we focus our chapter on the mechanisms of foraging selection which may enable us to have insight into grazing decision-making and processes. The central question is: what are principle drivers in grazing decision processes leading to high selectivity on species rich grasslands and this at different spatial and temporal levels?
