  • The article discusses the homonymous film based on the memoirs by the Brazilian author Fernando Gabeira - O que é isso, companheiro? (dir. Bruno Barreto, Brazil, 1997, in the U.S. launched under the title Four Days in September). The film tells the true story of the abduction of the American ambassador Charles Burke Elbrick in September of 1969 in Rio de Janeiro by two leftist guerrilla groups fighting against the Brazilian military regime. The article begins by situating this political thriller in the context of national film production. Then it reflects on the way the movie depicts the period of military dictatorship, paying attention to the ways both sides of the conflict are portrayed - the guerrilla members as well as the government with its repressive forces.
