Description
  • The book surveys a rich tradition of culture poetry in American context and the still largely unmapped presence of humor in recent and contemporary American poetry. The theme is covered with special focus on several recognized American poets of the second half of the twentieth century who in their public and private poetry reacted to the cultural and political development of the United States after World War II with irony, humor, and satire. The poetry of major postwar poets of the older generation (Allen Ginsberg, Kenneth Koch) is introduced as innovative in terms of content and form, with younger generations of poets (Mark Halliday, Campbell McGrath, Tony Hoagland, and Billy Collins) were able to develop this mode of poetry in the subsequent decades.
