Description
  • The lost books of medieval Moravian Jews are partly preserved in the bindings of medieval and early modern manuscripts, printed books and archival documents, since pages of these lost Hebrew manuscripts were eventually reused by Christian bookbinders. The distribution of host volumes in time reveals an interesting pattern: Hebrew fragments were reused in bindings at times when Jews were expelled, persecuted or the population of Moravia experienced hardships. Liturgical fragments testify the engagement of rabbis and scribes in recreating the Jewish prayerbook during the fifteenth century. Some of the Talmudic fragments probably belonged to the school of Rabbi Moses Kohen of Olomouc, who was possibly forced to convert to Christianity in 1425.
