Description
| - Elizabeth Spencer (born 1921), the novelist and short story writer from Carrollton, Mississippi, spent twenty-eight years, from 1958 to 1986, in Montréal before she returned to the South for both health reasons and homesickness, finding a new home for herself and her British-born husband in Chapel Hill, North Carolina. The article deals with the rendering of Montréal in her autobiography Landscapes of the Heart (1998), in her novel The Night Travellers (1991), as well as in her short stories %22I Maureen%22, %22The Search%22 and %22Jean-Pierre%22. Spencer saw significant parallels between French Canada and the South: both are for her conquered societies with different traditions and customs, having to exist in terms of a larger, controlling nation. In spite of that, she disagrees with the idea of the secession of Québec. For Spencer, Montréal (and sometimes Canada in general) is a multicultural place, a haven for the oppressed and the hunted, and a place of solitude and isolation.
