Description
  • This work documents the sculptures with atributes of labour from the period from the end of 19th century until half of 20th century. The aim this work is to analyse the forms and styles from classical mytology allegories to modern social topics. The pictures of work and workers were brought to sculpture art by the social changes at the end of 19th century. An important point was the foundation of Czechoslovakia in 1918. The young state represented itself by the development of city planning, supporting of art. The newbuild banks, administrative buildings, bridges and other utility buildings were not decorated in tradicional way with mytological and historical topics. The newborn republic expresses itself with the pictures of labour and folk art such as city, factory, workers, suburbs, normal life, people wearing contemporary clothes of businessmen or factory workers. These topics are shown in a very simple and realistic way. The artists show everyday life and changing lifestyle in their works. Regional influences and social critics begin to apear in the same time. The region where this happens is Moravia with its contrast of agricultural tradition on one hand and heavy industry in Ostrava region on other hand. The typical figure is factory worker, coal miner or ironworker. Another typical topic is country life. These artists inspired themselves with folk legends and idealistic fiction of those days. The sculptors from agricultural regions (middle and southern part of Moravia) choose figures of farmers, plougher, sowers, haymakers and symbolics of the work with soil. All this happened mostly in Twenties. From the year 1930 these topics become rarer. They come back after the war, in Fifties, but that was a completely different situation. It was political art of Communist regime. This situation lasted for forty years and it was only at the end of Eighties when the young artists bored by %22the Big topics%22 headed back to normal people, their work and regional specifics.
