Description
  • This paper aims to identify the specific characteristics of religion in the Czech part of Silesia, respectively in some areas thereof, in comparison with the situation in the Czech Republic as a whole. Some portions of this region rank among the most religious parts of an otherwise highly secularized Czech society. The question this paper tries to answer (or at least indicate a possible answer to) is: what are the factors which lead to the maintenance and continued reproduction of religion. The key concept aiding in the search for a suitable answer to this question is the concept of cultural memory. Methods: Historical analysis, statistical analysis. The religious situation in the Czech part of Silesia is illustrative for the study of the religious situation in Czech society. Silesia has not escaped the processes which have touched all of Czech society and led it to a highly secularized state. In addition, however, there are certain specifics which the study of religion must take into account. These include significant disruption of (religious) memory due to the displacement of the Czech population during the Second World War and subsequent expulsion of the German population (along with the arrival of new settlers). This perspective makes it possible to identify elements of continuity and discontinuity in religion. Analysis of the demographic structure of prominent religious groups in this region moreover points to the threat of disruption of the natural (biological) reproduction of religion. The concept of memory is offered as a fruitful theoretical framework for further research on religion in this area. This memory can be studied at different levels (national, regional, landscape, group, individual) to allow for a flexible identification of elements which facilitate the reproduction of religion.
