Description
  • This chapter gives information about Czech translations from Dutch before World War II, starting with František Kalda in 1908. The position of medieval literature in Czech translation was strengthened at the end of the 19th century, Julius Zeyer (1841-1901) being the main romantic Czech writer who applied medieval themes in his work, including also the theme of Beatrijs (in his Sestra Paskalina, 1887). Two scholars in the field of German studies, Otokar Fischer (1883-1938) and tto F. Babler (190-1984), were active as translators, among others of Middle Dutch literature. Babler translated the Middle Dutch prose version of the Beatrijs legend. In addition the Beatrijs theme recurred in a Czech translation of Maeterlinck's Souer Béatrice (Czech translation in 1903) that was very popular and was produced several times between 1904 and 1918 on the Czech stage. The French cinema adaptation of Jacques de Baroncelli (1923) of this piece was also popular. By contrast, the opera Beatrijs of the Polish-Dutch writer Ignace Lilien (Czech translation 1930) was welcomed by the public, but detested by theatre critics. (en)
