Description	This article suggests to outstep the competitive ability to define the appropriateness and quality in the educational system, taking as example the intercultural university education in Mexico. Based on the research performed among students of the Intercultural University of the Estado de México (UIEM) a hypothesis was formulated which expresses the idea that a competition and thus a competitive ability do not represent the axis of the image the informants keep of the educational model they are part of. The hypothesis claims that this educational model proceeding from the social solidarity represents an alternative to the dominant educational model and that it does not have to aspire necessarily to compete successfully with it. (en) El presente trabajo propone ir más allá de la competitividad para identificar la pertinencia y calidad en el área de la educación, tomando como ejemplo la educación intercultural a nivel superior en México. Con base en una investigación efectuada entre los alumnos de la Universidad Intercultural del Estado de México (UIEM) se plantea la hipótesis de que la competición y la competitividad no forman el eje central de la imagen que tienen los informantes del modelo educativo del que forman parte, y se sostiene que este modelo educativo fincado en la solidaridad social representa una alternativa a la modalidad educativa dominante y no necesariamente tiene que aspirar a competir exitosamente con él.
