Description
| - Speech perception has been described as a bi-directional process. This is to say that listeners make use of both bottom-up and top-down cues. Research of second-language (L2) speech perception, however, suggests that non-native listeners do not make efficient use of top-down cues when experiencing problems with bottom-up processing. This study investigates whether the relative degree of importance of bottom-up and top-down cues is related to the amount of L2 experience. Our subjects were Czech learners of English as a foreign language (EFL). Three experiments were conducted that all involved a conflict between segmental (bottom-up) and contextual (top-down) information. Contextual cues were provided either via the same (audio) mode or a different (visual) mode than the segmental cues. Results showed that the effect of conflicting cues was very similar across experience levels in audio mode.
