| - Tato studie rozebírá reakce chudých i bohatých Jižanů na katalog zásilkové firmy Sears, Roebuck (pravidelně ho dostávala poštou každá jižanská rodina), jak je popisují díla jižanských autorů 20. století. Tento katalog plnil funkci %22knihy přání%22, ale také %22knihy snů%22, což z něj činilo učebnici tvůrčího myšlení. Přestože společnost popírala jakoukoli snahu o mimoobchodní účinky svého katalogu, někteří její bývalí zástupci použili ve svých memoárech podobné metafory jako autoři, které jejich nabídkový katalog inspiroval. - The essay discusses the responses of poor as well as rich Southerners to Sears, Roebuck catalogs delivered regularly to every household in the South, as reflected in fiction by 20th century southern writers. This mail-order catalog played the roles of Wish Book and Dream Book, the latter making it the textbook of creative thinking. While the company denied any deliberate attempt at performing any other role besides that of businessmen, some former representatives of the company in their memoirs using metaphors strikingly similar to those employed by the writers inspired by their catalog. The writers discussed include William A. Owens, Tim McLaurin, Olive Ann Burns, Fred Chappell, Randall Jarrell, Harry Crews, Lewis Nordan, and Elizabeth Spencer.
