Description
| - To make the readers familiar with the development of the region the article will start with three different pictures of the region in the years 1850 – 1950. The first picture will offer of the initial situation of Ostrava region in the half of 19th century. Second picture it will describe the industrial region and Ostrava as stabilized administrative-industrial center and border city the interwar situation. Third picture will provide the reader with the reorientation of Ostrava from the war weapon industry to the region serving to the purposes of the socialist industrialization stressing the iron and coal production the after 1945. Particular attention will be paid to the so called “metal-farmer villages” as a transitional type between the urban and rural areas having a rural character of settlement, but the urban socio-economic structure (industrial workers). Here the majority of inhabitants was connected through their profession with the industrial centers, but with their way of life they remained faithful to the rural patterns of behavior. The second important transitional phenomenon discussed in the article will be the so called “workers colonies” developing until the WWII , the company settlements for the incoming migrants serving both as the tool of their social integration to the urban environment but at the same time due to its “ghetto character” as a way of sustaining and reproduction of many rural social patterns. These two phenomena will be analyzed as the transitional settlements which is difficult to place to the existing social-historical categories of city and countryside and at the same time as a phenomena hindering the process of modernization und urbanization in the interwar period. The article will be also devoted to the influence of the transport infrastructures (railway, public transport in Ostrava, etc.) on the relations between the rural and urban areas, and on the diminishing differences between both areas.
